SUMMARY:Now You See Me: The History and Mystery of Cryptoportraits in European Art
DESCRIPTION:A portrait can be much more than a straightforward likeness of a person. A cryptoportrait may\, at first sight\, not look like a portrait at all because it can be ‘disguised’ e.g. as an Adoration of the Magi with real people playing the parts of the Magi\, or as a statue of a prophet or saint with the features of a patron. Throughout Western art we may discover such concealed portraits if we look carefully and are prepared to recognise these visual games that artists and patrons chose to play with the beholder. \nDates and Locations \nThursday 7 August 2025 Yarra (VIC) \nSaturday 16 August 2025 Gold Coast (QLD) \nFriday 22 August 2025 Brisbane River (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:The Art of Pieter Bruegel The Elder
DESCRIPTION:Pieter Bruegel the Elder (d. 1569) is probably best known for his colourful depictions of peasants making merry or toiling in the fields. He also painted religious scenes in the Netherlandish countryside. Although these works lent him the epithet\, ‘Peasant Brueghel’\, his work was more than just charmingly naïve. He was very much a townsman with a good eye for landscape\, who painted for discerning collectors. He also lived in a time of religious and political turmoil that is evident in some of his ‘darker’ works. This lecture will show that there is more to Bruegel than peasant paintings. \nDates and Locations \nMonday 21 July 2025 Murray River (NSW/ VIC) \nThursday\, 24 July 2025 Molonglo Plains (NSW / ACT) \nWednesday 20 August & Thursday 21st August Brisbane (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Miniature Adults? Images of Childhood in Western Art
DESCRIPTION:Children can be found in art across at least five millennia. The question is whether these pictures are recognisable to us as children. When we look at early child portraits we often see diminutive figures\, stiff and often dressed in adult-like clothes: the stereotypical ‘miniature adults’ that confirm our worst fears. Yet what can depictions of children from Antiquity or by artists such as Holbein\, Velázquez and Reynolds\, really tell us about childhood in the past? Does art present us with reliable historical evidence or should we know how to read each image properly? Recognising the (artistic) conventions behind images of children in art may help to discover more about childhood throughout history\, and about social expectations. With insights from this lecture you will probably never look at portrayals of children in quite the same way again. \nDates and Locations \nWednesday 27 August 2025 Toowoomba (QLD) \nClick on the location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Art in Miniature: Illuminated Manuscripts in the Middle Ages
DESCRIPTION:A familiar image in medieval Annunciation scenes is that of the Virgin Mary reading a book\, but what exactly is she supposed to be reading? A devotional book probably\, and perhaps one with beautiful decorations: intricate initials\, miniatures glittering with gold\, and witty marginalia. The illuminators of such manuscripts have themselves often remained anonymous\, yet their artistry was greatly prized by wealthy patrons such as the Duke of Berry. This talk offers an introduction to medieval manuscript illumination: an art so rich and so highly regarded that it long managed to survive the advent of book printing. \nDates and Locations \nSaturday 30 August 2025 Rockhampton (QLD) \nClick on the location above for more details and to book tickets. \n
