SUMMARY:The Japanese Garden In The West: 100 years of Eastern Influence
DESCRIPTION:The serenity\, asymmetry and control of a Japanese garden is a seductive contrast to Western symmetry\, form and free growth. Even at the time of Japan’s self-imposed isolation\, 1639-1854\, information reached the West about trees\, plants\, flowers and designs through illustrations on imported porcelain\, lacquer and screens. Once Japan opened up\, travellers and plant-hunters were able to bring back information about the gardens\, and the plants themselves. Japanese garden styles became highly fashionable into the 20th century\, with several still identifiable. SUMMARY:Opium: Seduction\, Greed\, Art
DESCRIPTION:The source of the stuff of dreams\, the poppy is a beautiful\, fragile flower with immense power. Opium (from the Greek ‘opion’ – poppy juice) is a hypnotic bringer of sleep\, delightful lethargy and relief from pain. It is also highly addictive. Greed led to the introduction of this hugely desirable substance first to China\, and then to\nEurope. The beguiling seduction of its effects led to its use to quieten troubled minds and calm agitated children and babies. Its use – often by those with troubled minds – led to the creation of great works of art in music\, art and literature. SUMMARY:East Meets West: The Influence of Chinese and Japanese Art on European Decoration
DESCRIPTION:With the expansion of empires and the development of trade\, familiarity with Far Eastern arts and crafts took hold in Europe. At first items were imported directly\, but soon\, to cater to the need for the new\, both in China and Japan manufacturers created designs specifically for this trade. European houses soon mastered the arts and created their own designs to take advantage of the interest in all things Chinese and Japanese. SUMMARY:The Japanese Garden In The West: 100 years of Eastern Influence
DESCRIPTION:The serenity\, asymmetry and control of a Japanese garden is a seductive contrast to Western symmetry\, form and free growth. Even at the time of Japan’s self-imposed isolation\, 1639-1854\, information reached the West about trees\, plants\, flowers and designs through illustrations on imported porcelain\, lacquer and screens. Once Japan opened up\, travellers and plant-hunters were able to bring back information about the gardens\, and the plants themselves. Japanese garden styles became highly fashionable into the 20th century\, with several still identifiable.
