DESCRIPTION:This lecture traces the difficult birth of self-portraiture in Western art from minor characters in paintings of classical and Biblical stories to direct self-portraits in mirrors that also gaze out at unknown viewers – an ambiguity whose meaning changes across centuries. \nEmeritus Professor Richard Read is a Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia.
