SUMMARY:Flappers\, Speedos And The New Look – Fashion In Australia in the 20s\, 30s and 40s
DESCRIPTION:In the 1920s there wasn’t an Australian style in women’s dress. David Jones in 1921 advertised its “modestly priced reproductions and adaptations of Paris fashions.” Almost overnight\, the arrival of an economic depression brought a serious tone to society. Women’s hemlines dropped\, and the carefree age of the flapper was over. By the time Australia entered the Second World War\, the traditional role of women shifted with many joining the Australian Land Army. Rationing was brought in and women were taught to make ‘New Clothes from Old’ and ‘Make Do and Mend’. By 1947 Christian Dior’s New Look had restored femininity to both the fashion industry and women worldwide. While all the fuss was being made about the Parisian fashions\, two local designers were quietly paving the way for an Australian look and the beginnings of the Australian fashion industry. Enter Beril Jents and Hall Ludlow. Join Claudia Chan Shaw to discover the story of fashion in Australia from the twenties through to the forties. \nDates and Locations \nMonday 30 March 2026 Mudgee (NSW) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Albrecht Durer: Life\, Ego and Afterlife
DESCRIPTION:In his day\, Albrecht Dürer was a larger-than-life figure. Through the high quality of his woodcutting\, and the facility with which printed culture could be disseminated\, Dürer became an international success. Not a stranger to a mode of self-fashioning that would sit comfortably in today’s social media channels\, Dürer crafted a lasting legacy for his art through his prints\, paintings\, and copious writing. Yet\, the words he wrote – as much as the images he invented – reveal a man in profound search of his identity\, especially at a time when social and religious values were in radical flux. Albert traces the artist’s origins in his goldsmith father’s workshop in Nuremberg\, his ambitious travels in Italy and subsequent patronage by the Habsburgs. \nDates and Locations \nThursday 26 February 2026 Yarra (VIC) \nTuesday 3 March 2026 Launceston (TAS) \nFriday 6 March 2026 Brisbane River (QLD) \nSaturday 7 March 2026 Gold Coast (QLD) \nSunday 15 March 2026 Sunshine Coast (QLD) \nSaturday 21 March 2026 Rockhampton (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:The Pursuit of Perfection: Hendrick Goltzius (1558 – 1617)
DESCRIPTION:While no longer a household name\, the Dutch artist Hendrick Goltzius was regarded as a titan of printmaking for almost three centuries. To his contemporaries and subsequent generations\, Goltzius’ contribution to the development of engraving could not be overestimated. Our journey into his life and oeuvre will include key examples by his hand and those of the workshop he established in Haarlem in the 1580s. With clients all over Europe – from princes to politicians – Goltzius applied his talents not only to his prints but to marketing a signature Goltzius ‘brand’\, often in innovative and sometimes cunning ways. Goltzius’ designs would have a long-lasting and far-reaching influence appearing in works of art as far as India and Indonesia \nDates and Locations \nWednesday 18 March 2026 Toowoomba (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Better Than A Mirror – Frans Hals and Fine Art of Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Characterised by quick\, bravura brushstrokes\, Frans Hals’s portraits of nobles\, merchants\, actors\, friends and family members created a sensation in seventeenth century Holland. In order to ‘breathe life’ into his subject\, Hals incorporated vanguard modes of representation into his practice\, which reveal his and his society’s understanding of time and of human life itself. This lecture builds on new research\, exploring Hals’s art in wider historical as well as scientific contexts. We will examine the ways in which Hals engineered his portraits to suit his clientele — the citizens of Holland\, a society radically transformed by the Dutch Revolt. Finally\, we will consider the impact of Hals’s painterly style and his innovations in portraiture on later generations of artists. \nDates and Locations \nSaturday 14 March 2026 Noosa (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:The Art of Maps: Ancient\, Medieval and Modern
DESCRIPTION:This lecture discusses the development of maps of the world from the earliest civilisations to the most recent digital creations. They show gradual improvement for purposes of shipping\, trade and national sovereignty. This evolution of maps includes more accurate coastlines\, the addition of longitude and latitude and the placement of a consistent North; however\, maps have always shown what their creators desired or hoped for. Most of all Maps ancient\, medieval or modern are frequently pieces of great artistic skill and beauty. \nDate and Location \nFriday 13 March 2026 Mornington Peninsula (VIC) \nThursday 4 June 2026 Yarra (VIC) \n

SUMMARY:Johannes Vermeer and the Absent Subject
DESCRIPTION:Johannes Vermeer’s paintings might be considered typical of the ‘Dutch Golden Age’. Yet\, compared with his contemporaries’ works\, Vermeer’s serene interiors seem oddly different. This particular difference has preoccupied scholars since the ‘rediscovery’ of Vermeer in the 19th Century and will be the focus for our enquiry into his work. Is Vermeer’s subject the merry couple enjoying wine and music; the elegant furnishings; or is it the light and shadow which suffuses every detail and creates tonal nuances? The lecture will review the various interpretations of Vermeer’s art and consider the circumstances that may have influenced him in his day. \nDates and Locations \nFriday 27 February 2026 Mornington Peninsula (VIC) \nMonday 2 March 2026 Hobart (TAS) \nFriday 6 March 2026 Brisbane River (QLD) \nMonday 9 March 2026 Northern Rivers (NSW) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.
