SUMMARY:The True Story Behind the World's Biggest Art Heist
DESCRIPTION:On 18 March 1990\, the ‘impossible’ happened – thirteen works of art\, valued at a total of $500 million\, were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Museum officials\, police and security experts were completely baffled as to how this had happened. These great masterpieces have never been recovered; a devastating loss to the museum and its public. This talk relates the story of the fascinating police investigation into the missing paintings by Vermeer\, Rembrandt\, Degas and Manet; resulting in knowledge of how\, why and by whom the robbery was committed but leaving the crime officially ‘unsolved’. \nDates and Locations \nMonday 13 October 2025 Hunter (NSW) \nWednesday 15 October 2025 Tamworth (NSW) \nTuesday 4 November 2025 Scone (NSW) \nThursday 6 November 2025 Paddington\, Sydney (NSW) Lectures at 12:30pm and 6:00pm \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:How Constable’s Late Paintings Changed the Face of Modern Art
DESCRIPTION:Would you recognise John Constable R.A.’s ‘late’ oil studies? Constable’s exuberant\, almost abstract\, brush and palette-knife work shocked audiences for a full 50 years before Impressionism. In fact\, the handling is so avant-garde that it is impossible to tell what these paint strokes depict! Constable only sold 20 or so paintings in England during his lifetime\, as their rough and ‘specky’ surfaces horrified audiences. By contrast\, he sold many to forward-looking French art dealers and collectors. Consequently\, his radical ‘late’ works influenced generations of French painters\, making Constable a Forefather of Modern Painting. Sarah Cove’s work reveals a ‘Jackson Pollock of the 1830s’. \nDates and Locations \nMonday 13 October 2025 Hobart (TAS) \nTuesday 14 October 2025 Launceston (TAS) \nMonday 20 October 2025 Northern Rivers (NSW) \nWednesday 22 & Thursday 23 October Brisbane (QLD)  \nFriday 24 October 2025 Brisbane River (QLD) \nSaturday 1 November 2025 Rockhampton (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Mysteries of the Ancients: Bloodthirsty Gods\, Sacred Places and Mystical Signs
DESCRIPTION:Since the dawn of civilisation\, mankind has tried to understand and control the unseen powers of the sky\, the earth\, the seas and life itself. Ancient peoples left clues to their belief systems in all corners of the world in symbols\, inscriptions\, monuments and artefacts from the Aztec Calendar Stone and the Spear of Destiny to magic circles and Navaho sand paintings. Human hearts\, blood and children’s tears were all necessary to quench the hunger of the bloodthirsty gods of Mexico. If their needs were not satisfied the consequences for the nation would be catastrophic. Colossal pyramids are scattered across Mesoamerica but are they the same as those built by ancient Egyptians? \nDates and Locations \nThursday 9 October 2025 Chatswood (NSW). SUMMARY:The Mistress of Menace and the Master of Suspense
DESCRIPTION:Daphne Du Maurier and Alfred Hitchcock had much in common. Du Maurier is sometimes described as a romantic novelist\, but this is completely misleading. Like Hitchcock\, she dealt with themes of loneliness\, gender\, fear\, suspense and gothic imagery. They both built compelling and complex emotional landscapes for their characters. Although they never met\, the pair produced three cultural landmarks of the 20th century: Jamaica Inn\, Rebecca and The Birds`. In this lecture John will explore Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963)\, looking closely at some essential scenes in the film comparing the masterful techniques used on the page and on screen. \nDates and Locations \nSunday 14 September 2025 Cairns (QLD) \nWednesday 17 September 2025 Geelong (VIC) \nTuesday 23 September 2025 Canberra (ACT) \nMonday 29 September 2025 Fleurieu (SA) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Painting the Modern Garden - From Monet to Matisse
DESCRIPTION:Monet\, perhaps the most important painter of gardens\, once said he owed his painting “to flowers”. But so many other artists not only created gardens but made them the subject of their work – such as Pissarro\, Sargent\, Tissot\, Kandinsky\, Klee\, Van Gogh\, Klimt and Matisse. The modern garden\, transformed by 19th century innovations such as hybridisation\, glasshouses and foreign exploration\, was part of a great social change to which artists responded from the 1860s onwards. This talk traces the appearance of the garden as a modern phenomenon and the development of new art movements adopting it as their subject. \nDates and Locations \nWednesday 3 September 2025 Tamworth (NSW) \nThursday 4 September 2025 Armidale (NSW) \nTuesday 9 September 2025 Bowral (NSW) \nThursday 11 September 2025 Shoalhaven (NSW) \nWednesday 17 September 2025\, Orange (NSW) \nMonday 22 September 2025 Narrabri (NSW) \nTuesday 23 September 2025 Scone (NSW) \nThursday 25 September 2025 Sydney (NSW) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Who Done It? Alfred Hitchcock
DESCRIPTION:British film director Alfred Hitchcock is often referred to as the ‘master of darkness’. He made over fifty feature films where we often see innocent people were caught up in circumstances beyond their control. His catholic upbringing and uneasy relationship with femininity will be discussed in his early work of the Silent era. London based dramas\, Blackmail (1929) and Dial M for Murder (1954) will be closely analysed. Dial M for Murder shows Hitchcock at his obsessive best with his blonde idee fixe\, Grace Kelly\, under Hitchcock’s powerful male gaze. \nDates and Locations \nSunday 21 September 2024 Murray River (NSW / VIC) \nClick on the location above for more details and to book tickets.
