SUMMARY:I Got the Dust Bowl Blues: Texas and Oklahoma Photography\, Art and Music
DESCRIPTION:The Wall Street crash in 1929 led to a questioning of the success of the American dream. President Roosevelt stepped in with the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and the New Deal. In this lecture we will explore some of the key artists at this era. Jackson Pollock will be evaluated along with the social realism of Dorothea Lange and Ben Shahn. The soundtrack of the era is provided by Woody Guthrie and Jimmie Rogers.  \nDates and Locations \nWednesday 17 September 2025 Geelong (VIC) \nMonday 22 September 2025 Murray River (NSW / VIC) \nThursday 25 September 2025 Molonglo Plains (ACT / NSW) \nWednesday 1 October 2025 Adelaide (SA) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Painting the Modern Garden - From Monet to Matisse
DESCRIPTION:Monet\, perhaps the most important painter of gardens\, once said he owed his painting “to flowers”. But so many other artists not only created gardens but made them the subject of their work – such as Pissarro\, Sargent\, Tissot\, Kandinsky\, Klee\, Van Gogh\, Klimt and Matisse. The modern garden\, transformed by 19th century innovations such as hybridisation\, glasshouses and foreign exploration\, was part of a great social change to which artists responded from the 1860s onwards. This talk traces the appearance of the garden as a modern phenomenon and the development of new art movements adopting it as their subject. \nDates and Locations \nWednesday 3 September 2025 Tamworth (NSW) \nThursday 4 September 2025 Armidale (NSW) \nTuesday 9 September 2025 Bowral (NSW) \nThursday 11 September 2025 Shoalhaven (NSW) \nWednesday 17 September 2025\, Orange (NSW) \nMonday 22 September 2025 Narrabri (NSW) \nTuesday 23 September 2025 Scone (NSW) \nThursday 25 September 2025 Sydney (NSW) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Who Done It? Alfred Hitchcock
DESCRIPTION:British film director Alfred Hitchcock is often referred to as the ‘master of darkness’. He made over fifty feature films where we often see innocent people were caught up in circumstances beyond their control. His catholic upbringing and uneasy relationship with femininity will be discussed in his early work of the Silent era. London based dramas\, Blackmail (1929) and Dial M for Murder (1954) will be closely analysed. Dial M for Murder shows Hitchcock at his obsessive best with his blonde idee fixe\, Grace Kelly\, under Hitchcock’s powerful male gaze. \nDates and Locations \nSunday 21 September 2024 Murray River (NSW / VIC) \nClick on the location above for more details and to book tickets.

The government initiative meant employment for over eight million largely unskilled Americans and importantly 5\,300 artists. Murals\, painting\, photography\, graphic design all flourished.

SUMMARY:The Mistress of Menace and the Master of Suspense
DESCRIPTION:Daphne Du Maurier and Alfred Hitchcock had much in common. Du Maurier is sometimes described as a romantic novelist\, but this is completely misleading. Like Hitchcock\, she dealt with themes of loneliness\, gender\, fear\, suspense and gothic imagery. They both built compelling and complex emotional landscapes for their characters. Although they never met\, the pair produced three cultural landmarks of the 20th century: Jamaica Inn\, Rebecca and The Birds`. In this lecture John will explore Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963)\, looking closely at some essential scenes in the film comparing the masterful techniques used on the page and on screen. \nDates and Locations \nSunday 14 September 2025 Cairns (QLD) \nWednesday 17 September 2025 Geelong (VIC) \nTuesday 23 September 2025 Canberra (ACT) \nMonday 29 September 2025 Fleurieu (SA) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Vermeer and Music – Art of Love and Leisure
DESCRIPTION:About a third of 17th century Dutch paintings feature musical instruments or scenes of music-making. Music was celebrated as a means of social or familial bonding and as an expression of love\, while also feared for its seductive\, immoral connotations. A strict etiquette surrounded the act of performing music by men and women and the middle and lower classes. This talk includes musical excerpts played on original period instruments\, illustrating particular instruments shown in paintings. \nDates and Locations \nFriday 29 August 2025\, Mudgee (NSW) \nMonday 15 September 2025\, Coffs Coast (NSW) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.
