SUMMARY:Miniature Adults? Images of Childhood in Western Art
DESCRIPTION:Children can be found in art across at least five millennia. The question is whether these pictures are recognisable to us as children. When we look at early child portraits we often see diminutive figures\, stiff and often dressed in adult-like clothes: the stereotypical ‘miniature adults’ that confirm our worst fears. Yet what can depictions of children from Antiquity or by artists such as Holbein\, Velázquez and Reynolds\, really tell us about childhood in the past? Does art present us with reliable historical evidence or should we know how to read each image properly? Recognising the (artistic) conventions behind images of children in art may help to discover more about childhood throughout history\, and about social expectations. DESCRIPTION:Pieter Bruegel the Elder (d. 1569) is probably best known for his colourful depictions of peasants making merry or toiling in the fields. He also painted religious scenes in the Netherlandish countryside. Although these works lent him the epithet\, ‘Peasant Brueghel’\, his work was more than just charmingly naïve. He was very much a townsman with a good eye for landscape\, who painted for discerning collectors. He also lived in a time of religious and political turmoil that is evident in some of his ‘darker’ works. DESCRIPTION:As a pioneer of literary modernism\, T S Eliot inevitably influenced his counterparts in the visual arts. He was friends with several artists. Edward McKnight Kauffer and David Jones illustrated his work: Patrick Heron and Wyndham Lewls painted him; Jacob Epstein sculpted him. There are paintings inspired by his poems. SUMMARY:The Imperial Easter Eggs of Carl Fabergé
DESCRIPTION:Between 1885 – 1916\, Carl Fabergé made 50 jewelled eggs – Easter presents from Russia’s last two emperors to their wives. The most famous surviving symbols of the Romanov Empire\, they are supreme examples of the jeweller’s art\, albeit playthings of a decadent court. Given broad artistic freedom\, Fabergé had to satisfy just three rules: each gift should be egg shaped; contain some surprise to delight its recipient; and differ from any predecessor. The result? Treasures demonstrating ingenuity and creativity\, with few parallels. SUMMARY:Rembrandt's Vision: Dutch History Painting in the 17th Century
DESCRIPTION:‘History painting’ was a special genre for a distinct clientele in the Dutch Republic. It depicted stories from especially the Bible and Antiquity with the aim of moving the viewer. However\, it could also provide an excuse for depicting the female nude. Trained in history painting by Pieter Lastman\, Rembrandt gradually developed his own interpretations of such stories as Bathsheba and David or Susanna and the Elders with greater emphasis on inner conflict and personal drama. SUMMARY:Mesoamerica - Maya: Writing and Sacred Books. Sacred Mayan Astrology and Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:In Mayan culture there was no linguistic distinction between words painting\, drawing and writing. All modern Mayan languages are derived from Proto-Mayan\, a language spoken at least 5\,000 years ago. Mayan languages were written in hieroglyphic script which was widespread during the Classic period of Maya civilization (c. 250–900 CE). The Maya had a visually striking writing system which employed ideograms to create innumerable books known as the Mayan Codices. Priests alone could write these sacred books. Paper\, made from the inner bark of the fig tree ( amate paper )\, was used.
