SUMMARY:A Carpet Ride to Khiva

SUMMARY:Now You See Me: The History and Mystery of Cryptoportraits in European Art
DESCRIPTION:A portrait can be much more than a straightforward likeness of a person. A cryptoportrait may\, at first sight\, not look like a portrait at all because it can be ‘disguised’ e.g. as an Adoration of the Magi with real people playing the parts of the Magi\, or as a statue of a prophet or saint with the features of a patron. Throughout Western art we may discover such concealed portraits if we look carefully and are prepared to recognise these visual games that artists and patrons chose to play with the beholder. \nDates and Locations \nThursday 7 August 2025 Yarra (VIC) \nSaturday 16 August 2025 Gold Coast (QLD) \nFriday 22 August 2025 Brisbane River (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Unravelling the Silk Road
DESCRIPTION:The three textile roads that tangle their way through Central Asia\, changed and transformed the physical landscape\, history\, politics and culture of the region. Wool created the clothing and housing needed by the great nomadic cultures that were to dominate Middle Asia. Silk was more valuable than gold and used as currency\, creating a network of trading routes that led to the first age of globalisation. Cotton was the cause of Russian and then Soviet colonisation. All three textiles changed the fortunes of this part of the world: a meeting place between Mohammed and Marx. \nDates and Locations \nThursday 7 August 2025 Chatswood (NSW) \nWednesday 20 August Canberra (ACT) \nThursday 28 August Adelaide (SA) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Indians Buffalos and Storms: The American West in the 19th Century Art
DESCRIPTION:Artists were never far behind the explorers opening up America’s west in the 19th century. Sometimes they painted what they saw\, sometimes what they wished they saw. Either way\, painters like Alfred Miller\, Frederick Church and Albert Bierstadt left a powerful\, if romanticised\, record of the country and people they found. Their pictures also chart the arrival of the railroad\, the confinement of native Americans into reservations\, and the extermination of the buffalo. After a period of deep neglect\, their works are very much back in vogue. Whatever their artistic merits\, they tell a strong\, if tragic\, story. \nDates and Locations \nWednesday 6 August 2025 Tamworth (NSW) \nClick on the location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:The Genius of Stradivari
DESCRIPTION:250 years after Antonio Stradivari’s death\, his violins and cellos remain the world’s most highly prized instruments. Loved by great musicians and capable of fetching fabulous sums when sold\, their tone and beauty are legendary. Every subsequent violinmaker has tried to match them. Not one has succeeded. How can that be? This lecture explores that central mystery by following some of Stradivari’s instruments from his workshop to the present day. It is a story that travels from the salons of Vienna to auditoriums around the world. \nDates and Locations \nMonday 4 August 2025 Hunter (NSW) \nMonday 11 August 2025 Newcastle (NSW) \nFriday 15 August 2025 Shoalhaven (NSW) \nWednesday 20 August 2025 Orange (NSW) \nFriday 22 August 2025 Blue Mountains (NSW) \nMonday 25 August 2025 Narrabri (NSW) \nTuesday 26 August 2025 Scone (NSW) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Love\, Marriage and Fidelity in Western Art
DESCRIPTION:Love and marriage have always been a source of inspiration to authors and artists alike. One of the most famous portraits in the National Gallery is Van Eyck’s enigmatic Arnolfini Portrait\, but marital depictions have a much longer history: in Ancient Egypt people chose to have themselves immortalised as loving couples. Double or pendant portraits were also commissioned in large numbers from artists such as Rembrandt\, Hals and Gainsborough. Yet others show a more ironic or even cynical attitude\, for love and marriage are not always a bed of roses! \nDates and Locations \nSaturday 2 August 2025 Perth (WA) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:The Imperial Easter Eggs of Carl Fabergé
DESCRIPTION:Between 1885 – 1916\, Carl Fabergé made 50 jewelled eggs – Easter presents from Russia’s last two emperors to their wives. The most famous surviving symbols of the Romanov Empire\, they are supreme examples of the jeweller’s art\, albeit playthings of a decadent court. Given broad artistic freedom\, Fabergé had to satisfy just three rules: each gift should be egg shaped; contain some surprise to delight its recipient; and differ from any predecessor. The result? Treasures demonstrating ingenuity and creativity\, with few parallels. Their maker’s relentless search for novelty also yielded a fabulously quirky illustrated history of the Romanovs’ decline ahead of the 1917 Revolution. \nDates and Locations \nFriday 1 August 2025 Mudgee (NSW) \nMonday 11 August 2025 Newcastle (NSW) \nFriday 15 August 2025 Shoalhaven (NSW) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:A Carpet Ride to Khiva
DESCRIPTION:Chris Aslan tells his own story of working with UNESCO to establish a silk carpet workshop in the desert oasis of Khiva\, Uzbekistan – the most homogenous example of Islamic architecture in the world. His work took him to the bazaars of Afghanistan to purchase natural dyes\, and to the great libraries and museums of Europe to track down 15th century manuscripts to revive carpet designs from their illuminations. He also saw the lives of women transformed and became the largest private employer in town. \nDates and Locations \nMonday\, 28 July 2025 Narrabri (NSW) \nThursday 31 July 2025 Paddington\, Sydney (NSW) \nWednesday 6 August\, Chatswood\, Sydney (NSW) \nWednesday 13 August\, Geelong (VIC) \nThursday 14 August\, Melbourne (VIC) \nTuesday 19 August\, Canberra (ACT) \nSaturday 30 August\, Perth (WA) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Rembrandt's Vision: Dutch History Painting in the 17th Century
DESCRIPTION:‘History painting’ was a special genre for a distinct clientele in the Dutch Republic. It depicted stories from especially the Bible and Antiquity with the aim of moving the viewer. However\, it could also provide an excuse for depicting the female nude. Trained in history painting by Pieter Lastman\, Rembrandt gradually developed his own interpretations of such stories as Bathsheba and David or Susanna and the Elders with greater emphasis on inner conflict and personal drama. His visions can still move or disturb us in ways quite different from depictions of the same stories by his contemporaries.  \nDates and Locations \nMonday 28 July 2025 Fleurieu (SA) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Mesoamerica - Maya: Writing and Sacred Books. Sacred Mayan Astrology and Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:In Mayan culture there was no linguistic distinction between words painting\, drawing and writing. All modern Mayan languages are derived from Proto-Mayan\, a language spoken at least 5\,000 years ago. Mayan languages were written in hieroglyphic script which was widespread during the Classic period of Maya civilization (c. 250–900 CE). The Maya had a visually striking writing system which employed ideograms to create innumerable books known as the Mayan Codices. Priests alone could write these sacred books. Paper\, made from the inner bark of the fig tree ( amate paper )\, was used. Through their sacred books we can appreciate the scientific developments of this amazing civilisation. \nDates and Locations \nSaturday 26 July 2025 Rockhampton (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:The Art of Pieter Bruegel The Elder
DESCRIPTION:Pieter Bruegel the Elder (d. 1569) is probably best known for his colourful depictions of peasants making merry or toiling in the fields. He also painted religious scenes in the Netherlandish countryside. Although these works lent him the epithet\, ‘Peasant Brueghel’\, his work was more than just charmingly naïve. He was very much a townsman with a good eye for landscape\, who painted for discerning collectors. He also lived in a time of religious and political turmoil that is evident in some of his ‘darker’ works. This lecture will show that there is more to Bruegel than peasant paintings. \nDates and Locations \nMonday 21 July 2025 Murray River (NSW/ VIC) \nThursday\, 24 July 2025 Molonglo Plains (NSW / ACT) \nWednesday 20 August & Thursday 21st August Brisbane (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Paracas: The Most Splendid Textiles of The Americas
DESCRIPTION:The Paracas civilisation developed between 800 BCE and 100 BCE. Paracas textiles included complex weaving techniques\, elaborate plaiting and knotting. Paracas necropolises contained bodies in baskets wrapped in large cotton textiles embroidered with camelid fibres. Paracas embroideries are considered the finest ever produced in the Americas and are remarkable works of art. Designs on textiles were achieved by painting\, embroidering\, sewing feathers of rare tropical birds and using 3D ‘structural weaving’. Peruvian weaving remains one of the finest traditions in the world. \nDates and Locations \n23 July – Toowoomba (QLD) \n26 July – Rockhampton (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Frans Hals: A Dutch Painter with Flemish Roots
DESCRIPTION:Frans Hals is one of the best-loved painters of the Dutch Golden Age\, with his Laughing Cavalier one of the highlights of the Wallace Collection. The Frans Hals Museum is in Haarlem\, but the artist was born in Antwerp from which his family fled north to escape war and persecution.\nWe know little about Hals’s life: he married twice and had a large family. He was popular yet constantly experienced financial difficulties. Hals specialised in people: portraits of wealthy burghers\, but also merry drinkers and naughty children. His virtuoso brushwork and joie de vivre make his sitters still seem alive centuries later. \nDates and Locations \nTuesday 22 July 2025 Canberra (ACT) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Mesoamerica - The Aztec: An Introduction to the Urban Culture of the Americas- Mexico
DESCRIPTION:The Aztecs probably originated as a nomadic tribe in northern Mexico and arrived at Mesoamerica around the beginning of the 13th century. The Aztecs were also known as the Tenochca\, from which the name for their capital city\, Tenochtitlan\, was derived. They are also known as the Mexica\, from which the name of the entire country of Mexico is derived. By the 15th century\, the Aztecs had developed an intricate social\, political\, religious\, and commercial federation that brought many of the region’s city-states under their control. Tenochtitlan was founded on June 8th 1325. At its height\, the city had more than 200\,000 inhabitants and was the most densely populated city ever to exist in Mesoamerica. In 1521\, Spanish conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes overthrew the Aztecs and captured their capital\, ending Mesoamerica’s last great civilisation. \nDates and Locations \nSaturday 19 July 2025 Noosa (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.
