SUMMARY:‘Once Upon A Time … In Blue and White’: The Story of the Willow Pattern Plate
DESCRIPTION:Two lovers meeting underneath the orange tree\, an elopement\, a fierce father and jilted suitor; pursuit across a bridge and into a little boat; tragedy and death. Two love-birds flying together forever – all under the gentle sway of the willow tree – on the instantly recognisable ‘Willow Pattern Plate’. From the early nineteenth century it was well-known and much loved design on thousands of English teapots\, plates and dishes. Is it Chinese? Is it English? With one or two surprises\, the story behind this famous image takes us from the origins of blue and white designs in the exotic East to the emerging wealth of the Midlands pottery towns. \nDates and Locations \nMonday 12 October 2026 Hobart (TAS) \nFriday 16 October 2026 Brisbane River (QLD) \nWednesday 28 October 2026 Toowoomba (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:The Japanese Garden In The West: 100 years of Eastern Influence
DESCRIPTION:The serenity\, asymmetry and control of a Japanese garden is a seductive contrast to Western symmetry\, form and free growth. Even at the time of Japan’s self-imposed isolation\, 1639-1854\, information reached the West about trees\, plants\, flowers and designs through illustrations on imported porcelain\, lacquer and screens. Once Japan opened up\, travellers and plant-hunters were able to bring back information about the gardens\, and the plants themselves. Japanese garden styles became highly fashionable into the 20th century\, with several still identifiable. Tracing the origins of garden styles\, the plants used and the surviving Western examples we can ask; is it possible to create a ‘Japanese’ garden outside Japan\, or do we merely give it a Japanese voice? \nDates and Locations \nFriday 9 October 2026 Mornington Peninsula (VIC) \nSunday 25 October 2026 Sunshine Coast (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:East Meets West: The Influence of Chinese and Japanese Art on European Decoration
DESCRIPTION:With the expansion of empires and the development of trade\, familiarity with Far Eastern arts and crafts took hold in Europe. At first items were imported directly\, but soon\, to cater to the need for the new\, both in China and Japan manufacturers created designs specifically for this trade. European houses soon mastered the arts and created their own designs to take advantage of the interest in all things Chinese and Japanese. This interest day looks at how this vast trade came to be and how these designs trickled down from treasures for palaces to everyday wares. \nDates and Locations \nWednesday 7 October 2026 Yarra (VIC) \nFriday 16 October 2026 Brisbane River (QLD) \nThursday 22 October 2026 Brisbane (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Opium: Seduction\, Greed\, Art
DESCRIPTION:The source of the stuff of dreams\, the poppy is a beautiful\, fragile flower with immense power. Opium (from the Greek ‘opion’ – poppy juice) is a hypnotic bringer of sleep\, delightful lethargy and relief from pain. It is also highly addictive. Greed led to the introduction of this hugely desirable substance first to China\, and then to\nEurope. The beguiling seduction of its effects led to its use to quieten troubled minds and calm agitated children and babies. Its use – often by those with troubled minds – led to the creation of great works of art in music\, art and literature.
