SUMMARY:Mesoamerica - Maya: Writing and Sacred Books. Sacred Mayan Astrology and Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:In Mayan culture there was no linguistic distinction between words painting\, drawing and writing. All modern Mayan languages are derived from Proto-Mayan\, a language spoken at least 5\,000 years ago. Mayan languages were written in hieroglyphic script which was widespread during the Classic period of Maya civilization (c. 250–900 CE). The Maya had a visually striking writing system which employed ideograms to create innumerable books known as the Mayan Codices. Priests alone could write these sacred books. Paper\, made from the inner bark of the fig tree ( amate paper )\, was used. Through their sacred books we can appreciate the scientific developments of this amazing civilisation. \nDates and Locations \nSaturday 26 July 2025 Rockhampton (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:The Art of Pieter Bruegel The Elder
DESCRIPTION:Pieter Bruegel the Elder (d. 1569) is probably best known for his colourful depictions of peasants making merry or toiling in the fields. He also painted religious scenes in the Netherlandish countryside. Although these works lent him the epithet\, ‘Peasant Brueghel’\, his work was more than just charmingly naïve. He was very much a townsman with a good eye for landscape\, who painted for discerning collectors. He also lived in a time of religious and political turmoil that is evident in some of his ‘darker’ works. This lecture will show that there is more to Bruegel than peasant paintings. \nDates and Locations \nMonday 21 July 2025 Murray River (NSW/ VIC) \nThursday\, 24 July 2025 Molonglo Plains (NSW / ACT) \nWednesday 20 August & Thursday 21st August Brisbane (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Paracas: The Most Splendid Textiles of The Americas
DESCRIPTION:The Paracas civilisation developed between 800 BCE and 100 BCE. Paracas textiles included complex weaving techniques\, elaborate plaiting and knotting. Paracas necropolises contained bodies in baskets wrapped in large cotton textiles embroidered with camelid fibres. Paracas embroideries are considered the finest ever produced in the Americas and are remarkable works of art. Designs on textiles were achieved by painting\, embroidering\, sewing feathers of rare tropical birds and using 3D ‘structural weaving’. Peruvian weaving remains one of the finest traditions in the world. \nDates and Locations \n23 July – Toowoomba (QLD) \n26 July – Rockhampton (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Frans Hals: A Dutch Painter with Flemish Roots
DESCRIPTION:Frans Hals is one of the best-loved painters of the Dutch Golden Age\, with his Laughing Cavalier one of the highlights of the Wallace Collection. The Frans Hals Museum is in Haarlem\, but the artist was born in Antwerp from which his family fled north to escape war and persecution.\nWe know little about Hals’s life: he married twice and had a large family. He was popular yet constantly experienced financial difficulties. Hals specialised in people: portraits of wealthy burghers\, but also merry drinkers and naughty children. His virtuoso brushwork and joie de vivre make his sitters still seem alive centuries later. \nDates and Locations \nTuesday 22 July 2025 Canberra (ACT) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.

SUMMARY:Mesoamerica - The Aztec: An Introduction to the Urban Culture of the Americas- Mexico
DESCRIPTION:The Aztecs probably originated as a nomadic tribe in northern Mexico and arrived at Mesoamerica around the beginning of the 13th century. The Aztecs were also known as the Tenochca\, from which the name for their capital city\, Tenochtitlan\, was derived. They are also known as the Mexica\, from which the name of the entire country of Mexico is derived. By the 15th century\, the Aztecs had developed an intricate social\, political\, religious\, and commercial federation that brought many of the region’s city-states under their control. Tenochtitlan was founded on June 8th 1325. At its height\, the city had more than 200\,000 inhabitants and was the most densely populated city ever to exist in Mesoamerica. In 1521\, Spanish conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes overthrew the Aztecs and captured their capital\, ending Mesoamerica’s last great civilisation. \nDates and Locations \nSaturday 19 July 2025 Noosa (QLD) \nClick on your preferred location above for more details and to book tickets.
