Presented by Amanda Herries
With the expansion of empires and the development of trade, familiarity with Far Eastern arts and crafts took hold in Europe. At first items were imported directly, but soon, to cater to the need for the new, both in China and Japan manufacturers created designs specifically for this trade. European houses soon mastered the arts and created their own designs to take advantage of the interest in all things Chinese and Japanese. This interest day looks at how this vast trade came to be and how these designs trickled down from treasures for palaces to everyday wares.
