Winner of ArtsNational Emerging Artist Prize 2026 of $20,000
We are thrilled to announce that the winner of the inaugural ArtsNational Emerging Artist Prize 2026 of $20,000 is Fergus Berney-Gibson.
Fergus is a young artist based in Sydney whose multi-disciplinary practice examines fraternal historiography through the remediation of photographic and material archives. He completed his Master of Fine Arts at the National Art School in 2025. He intends to use the prize money from ArtsNational to augment his studio with the equipment needed to broaden his practice and further his career.
We thank the eminent panel of judges for their time and expertise: Claudia Chan Shaw, Ron Ramsey and Leigh Capel.
The judges said, “Fergus is an exciting artist who extends boundaries and approaches his work in a considered and original way. The prize should ensure a very bright future career in the arts.”
They also praised the high standard of work by Highly Commended award recipients, Sadie Whelan and Nicole Clift.
