
Penny Gay
BIOGRAPHY
Penny Gay is Professor Emerita in English and Drama at the University of Sydney, where she taught for 35 years. Her books include As She likes It: Shakespeare’s Unruly Women (1994), Jane Austen and the Theatre (2003), and The Cambridge Introduction to Shakespeare’s Comedies (2008). Theatre and performance history (particularly of Shakespeare’s plays) is a lifelong passion, which she has pursued in her retirement by exploring historic theatres and archives throughout the UK and Europe. She has reviewed performances and written program essays for productions by major companies in both England and Australia. She also greatly enjoys leading discussion groups on a wide range of literary topics from the classics to contemporary writing.
